a play exploring the law, trauma and discussion around sexual assault
paired with a gallery showcasing a donated story of rape

An original piece written by Julius Rea, directed by Kieran Beccia and curated by Katharine Hada. The Forum produced the project at arts incubator and gallery Adelines Lab from December 6 - 9, 2018. Rea received a Theatre Bay Area CA$H PERFORMS grant for the play. After a successful run of the show, Sarafael was co-produced from March 21 - 31, 2019 in partnership with Ubuntu Theater Project.

The play follows Ari after her childhood friend accuses her brother of rape as she travels inside the mind of the man investigating the incident. The adjoining gallery included a reported account of a sexual assault and the translated versions of the story after it was shared amongst members of the artistic team from memory. Additionally, patrons were asked to write thoughts and feelings on slips of paper either in response to the show or of their own encounters with sexual assault; those responses were also posted in a section of the gallery.
