Mother+Peace
Mother+Peace premiered on May 14, 2022 for an intimate exploration into the project and a journey towards repairing personal relationships with family members and the Earth itself. Hosted at The Berkeley School, the event became a safe space for attendees to hold each other and themselves.
Beginning with a land acknowledgement and ritual from Ira X Armstrong (of PEACE Out Loud), the entire event broke down Lin’s creative process, the presentation of the piece itself, a guided writing exercise, and a workshop exclusively for queer and BIPOC attendees.
In the writing exercise, participants were encouraged to openly write their feelings down on paper. These notes would eventually led to open letters to the mothers, parents, or relatives in question. These letters did not have to be sent but could be used to process emotions externally.
To continue this practice, use these prompts to begin a letter sharing your unexpressed feelings and thoughts.
What are some hurtful things your mother used to say to you that you’ve internalized?
What is your relationship like with your mother? What about your relationship like with Mother Earth?
How do you hold all of the things you’ve internalized/all of the words withheld and left unsaid? How does it feel in your body?
What are the mixed feelings you have towards your relationship with your mother? What would you wish it to look like?
How do you see yourself? What are things you are leaning into in your healing journey? How do you wish your mother to see you?
What is your relationship like with holding yourself? Letting yourself be held?
